"I'll miss you."

"I'll miss you more."

Caroline honked the horn long and hard, breaking the pair apart. "Sorry." She smiled innocently.

Shelly gave Richard one more kiss. "Call me when you get there."

Richard smiled. "I will."

Caroline leaned out the window. "Do you want to drive first?"

Richard pecked Shelly on the cheek and got in the passenger seat.

"I'll take that as a no."

The second she hit the gas pedal, Caroline knew it was going to be a long trip. How she let Shelly talk her into it, she'll never know. Her reasoning was good after 3 margueritas. "Its better to drive to New York with someone you barely know than ll alone," she had told her. "What if you break down?"

Richard had been silent since they got on the road. As soon as the car started moving he had immersed himself in a book. It drove Caroline crazy. She'd rather make conversation than sit in silence. Silence made her uncomfortable.

"Whatcha readin'?"

Richard figured it was only a matter of time before she spoke up. Shelly hadn't told him much about her except that she really liked to talk. He was impressed, though. She had been quiet for 2 whole hours.

"A book" came his reply.

Caroline sighed. "I know that. Which one?"

"Probably something you've never heard of"

"What's that supposed to mean? I read."

Richard finally looked up. "I'm not talking about the funny papers. Isn't that more your specialty?"

It was, she supposed. She was moving to New York to become a cartoonist. Not exactly something many people aspire to be, but it was just another outlet to comment on the times we live in. But he thought it was silly and it made her feel stupid. She decided right then that she didn't like him.

Caroline got off at the next exit and pulled into a gas station. "We need gas and it's your turn to drive"

Caroline moved into the passenger seat as Richard got gas. When he walked into pay, she watched him. As soon as he came back out she looked down in her lap. He let himself in the drivers side, started the car and threw a small package of Hershey Kisses in her lap. She glared at him and he smiled. "You know, you're kinda cute when you're angry."
