Why was Caroline in the City cancelled?
Of course there is no one single answer to question why Caroline in the City was cancelled, but there are some indicators...
As usual, there is no easy answer to that question, but basically if you take a hard look at the viewing numbers the decision must have been based on decreasing audience with each season. Besides, the change of the slot from Thursday and Tuesday to Mondays was one of the factors.
While the first season was placed between Seinfeld and ER, two series with large audience, it was easy for Caroline in the City to keep high ratings. In the second season, CITC was placed between Frasier and Dateline, which was a slightly worse position, and caused a drop in viewing numbers. In the third season, Caroline in the City was put together with Suddenly Susan and Naked Truth in a lineup called 'Mondays with independent women' (with Fired Up mixed between them), which perhaps was a good idea on paper, but the similarity of the series did not resonate well with the audience (for The Naked Truth it was the last season).
Last season of Caroline in the City was placed between Suddenly Susan and Will & Grace, but was preceded by Conrad Bloom (a short living sitcom starring Mark Feuerstein and Lauren Graham, who both play minor roles in CITC) and the rankings dropped again.
Also, the changes that were made to the CITC setting in last season just did not work well - moving the story from Caroline's apartment to office space, the will-they-won't-they plot replaced by a turbulent relationship just did not feel all that great. Also, the lack of Remo and Johnny (Remo's restaurant was completely removed from the plot) made the shift in chemistry between characters - new arrivals did not really fit with the group, what worked so far was missing.
